Former MLB (Major League Baseball) All-Star infielder Jose Lopez is headed to Japan after signing with the Tokyo Yomiuri Giants of Japan's Central League for a one year deal at US $911,000.
Lopez, 29, played nine years in MLB starting in 2004, and was an All-Star Third Baseman with Seattle in 2006. After spending seven seasons with the Mariners, Lopez played for Colorado Rockies, Florida Marlins, Cleveland Indians and the last year with the Chicago White Sox.
Lopez is a career .262 hitter, with a total of 92 home runs and 480 RBI (runs batted in).
Is he worth $911,000 a year? No.
Lopez only played 15 games for Chicago and 66 with Cleveland in 2012, with the rest in Triple A in the International League. That's the minor leagues.
I don't know Lopez personally, and I'm sure he is a fine gentleman, but even with inflation, I don't see how any one baseball player - especially one with a .262 batting average - can earn more money in one year than Babe Ruth did in his entire career.
Regardless of Japan's notoriously short stadium fences, the Giants should not expect Lopez to be a big hitter for them, though he should still be able to flash the leather in the infield.
Cheers
