My buddy Matthew has pointed out a story to me located in the BBC News website, about The Phantom, a superhero before Superman created by American writer Lee Falk.
Of course, Falk also created the comic strip adventures of Mandrake The Magician. Both Mandrake and The Phantom have long been favorite reading material for myself.
Check out the BBC movie within the article, which mentions how The Phantom was fighting World War II adversaries long before the U.S. became involved in December of 1941. You'll note that before Japan attacked the U.S. base at Pearl Harbor in the country of Hawaii (a protectorate of the U.S.), the U.S. sat on the sidelines while the rest of Europe took it up the butt from Nazi Germany with the official start of the war in September of 1939.
Why I mention this, is because the Phantom also took on the Japanese in battle. Timely Comics (later Marvel Comics) also had its heroes like Captain America, The Human Torch (an android created by Phineas Horton) and The Sub-mariner also take on the so-called axis of evil.
DC (then Nation Periodical Publications), home to Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman - not so much... perhaps reasoning that these superheroes would easily vanquish their foes - so what the heck is the real army doing?
I believe DC utilized a Spear of Destiny in the hands of Hitler to ensure that the superheroes were unable to battle the axis. The Spear of Destiny was supposed to have been the spear that a Roman soldier used to pierce the side of Jesus Christ while he was on the cross.
Having just written all of that from memory, I have shown you my incredible inner Nerd.
Check out that BBC News story HERE.
Cheers
